Our Services

  • General Wellness

    Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and Kittens obtain immunity from many diseases from their mother, however, this protection is short-lived. At Carthage Veterinary Hospital we provide a vaccination schedule that will protect your new friend against many serious, life-threatening diseases in our area.

Over the course of several visits, you may expect your new puppy to be vaccinated against:

adenovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvo virus, rabies

We recommend for all kittens and puppies to begin a vaccination schedule at the age of 6 weeks.

    A typical vaccination schedule includes

Approximately 6 weeks of age: DHPP (Combination Vaccination), Intestinal Parasite Evaluation (A laboratory test to detect internal parasites) Deworming Nail Trim

Approximately 8 weeks of age: DHPP 2nd Booster, Deworming, Nail Trim

Approximately 12 weeks of age: DHPP 3rd Booster, Bordetella 1st Booster, Deworming, Nail Trim

Approximately 16 weeks of age: DHPP 4th Booster, Bordetella 2nd Booster, Rabies, Deworming, Nail Trim

Recommendations for heartworm, flea, and tick prevention are made at the time of the visit. This way we ensure that we are recommending the proper product for you and your new kitten or puppy.

    Prime of Life Wellness

All members of your family- including your pets- need ongoing wellness care to ensure a long and healthy life. The information taken by your veterinarian at each examination becomes part of your pet's permanent medical history and can be critical if an emergency or sudden illness arises.

Wellness visits involve the assessment of your pet's overall health, weight, body condition and any aging changes in addition to condition and any aging changes in addition to the complete evaluation of all major body systems, and will include:

Weight, Temperature, Body condition, Coat and skin quality, Cardiovascular function, Respiratory function, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat, Rectal/anal sac condition, Abdominal palpation to detect abnormal intestine, kidney, liver or spleen size, as well as detect large tumors from these organs, Teeth and gum conditions, Lymphatic system, Basic neurological system, Musculoskeletal system

    Wellness Schedule

Dogs: Annual examination, Appropriate vaccinations, Heartworm test, and Intestinal Parasite Evaluation Yearly
Cats: Annual examination, Appropriate vaccinations, and Intestinal parasite evaluation Yearly.

    Senior Care

Advances in veterinary medicine allow us to help pets live longer than ever before. With an increased lifespan, however, comes an increase in the types of ailments that can afflict senior pets. Pets' age-related conditions and diseases include: weight and mobility changes; osteoarthritis; kidney, heart and liver diseases; tumors and cancers; hormone disorders, such as diabetes and thyroid imbalance; and many others. We work closely with our clients to devise health plans to maintain optimal health of aging pets.

In accordance with the guidelines of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), at a minimum, it is years/human year of life, more frequent check-ups may be suggested. Animals' accelerated aging means that a pet's health can change dramatically in a very short period of time Careful attention will be paid to the Senior examined by our veterinarian, especially to the pet's orthopedic status, cardiovascular system and ophthalmic condition.

Age-appropriate blood tests, a urinalysis and suggestions for the use of products that can be of benefit might also be recommended The aging process applies to animals and people in the same way: Associated changes naturally occur in behavior, anatomy (the structures of the body) and physiology (the functioning of these body parts). Your doctor will discuss with you the normal developmental processes of your aging pet and any diagnosed deviations from what is considered normal.

  • Vaccinations are a critically important part of your pet's healthcare. Pets, especially those that go outdoors, are at risk for exposure to infectious diseases.

Your Carthage Veterinarian makes sure that every pet receives the immunizations needed on a schedule that provides optimal protection.

    Vaccination Schedule

    Puppies: 6 wks, 8 wks, 12 wks, 16 wks
    Kittens: 6 wks, 10wks, 14wks
Adult Dogs: DHPP or DHLPP yearly, Rabies year, Bordetella every 6 months
Adult Cats: FVRCP yearly, FELK yearly, Rabies yearly

We recommend you spay or neuter your pet at 6 months of age

  • General Surgery Includes

Post Operative Laser Therapy, Pain Management, Gas Anesthesia, Pulse Ox Monitoring, Referal surgery and surgeons when needed

Our veterinarian and veterinary technicians provide constant monitoring and maintenance of the pet from time the patient is asleep until the animal is awake.

    Dental Health

Good dental hygiene can increase your pet's health, vitality, well being and add additional years to his or her life. Regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings help ensure your pet leads the best life possible.

If left untreated, dental disease can not only be painful and inhibit proper nutrition, but it can also lead to serious systemic issues that may threaten your pet's health before symptoms are noticeable. It is estimated that more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats develop tooth and gum disease by the age of three years.

Oral disease typically develops in stages:

Stage 1- Gum tissue around the teeth can become inflamed and swollen. Plaque and tartar are usually present

Stage 2- Inflammation progresses to an infection that starts to destroy gum and bone tissue around the teeth. Bad breath may be noticeable

Stage 3-Continuning infection destroys more tissue around the teeth, often causing bleeding gums and loosening of teeth.

Stage 4-Extensive infection is tearing down even more of the attachment tissues (gum and bone). Teeth are at risk of being lost.

Part of the treatment plan will include a professional dental cleaning under carefully monitored anesthesia, pre-anesthetic blood work, antibiotics, and pain medication as needed.

Serious health issues can occur the teeth are not taken care of properly. Infections occur when the bacteria, which form the plague and tartar, on uncared-for teeth gets into your bloodstream. From there, it can create internal infections and irreversible side effects including heart failure.

    Teeth cleaning includes:

Oral exam, Subgingival scaling, Tooth scaling, Polishing, Rinsing

  • Microchipping

Young and older pets may not have the knowledge or memory to find their way home should they ever get loose. To avoid unnecessary stress for both you and your furry family members, microchipping your pet by surgically implanting a micro-chip under your animal's skin is a simple and affordable way to ensure that you are returned to each other's arms as soon as possible.

The procedure is as painless as a vaccination and quickly identifies your pet as 'owned'. The chip contains pertinent information that can be read by a special scanner, reuniting the two of you before mistaken euthanasia could occur at a shelter.

    Health Certificates

    Small Animal:

Many airlines and states require a health certificate for pets. Requirements may vary, typically a health certificate needs to be issued within 10 days of travel. Pets need documentation of current rabies vaccination for a health certificate to be issued. Hawaii and international travel require extensive additional preparation.

    Large Animal/Livestock:

Any livestock requires a health certificate to leave the state, and there are several instate livestock, horse shows, and rodeos that require a health certificate within 30 days.

  • Radiology

Our on-site radiology suite features modern digital x-ray equipment that provides high quality radiographs that aid in the quick diagnosis of many disorders. We can take radiographs of the long bones and joints, spine, heart and lungs, abdomen and skull.

Our digital system offers several advantages that benefit our clients, patients, staff and the environment.

Digital x-rays allow us to capture and view images almost instantaneously, eliminating the time it takes to process and develop the x-ray film used in traditional systems

The images obtained with the digital system are extremely high resolution and can be modified after they are captured, reducing the need to re-take x-rays and increasing the quality and diagnostic value of the x-rays. This means less waiting time for you, less time on the x-ray table for your pet, less environmental waste and a faster diagnosis.

Your pet’s digital x-rays can also be easily transmitted to specialists for consultations.

    Hematology

We provide our patients with a in-house laboratory capable of fast and accurate blood profiles including Complete Blood Count (CBC) and blood profiles.
